WeVideo is committed to using AI technologies ethically and responsibly. WeVideo follows data governance principles and best practices in handling AI-related data, including data storage, processing, sharing, and retention. WeVideo complies with applicable data protection laws, industry standards, and regulatory requirements related to AI technologies, such as GDPR and CCPA.
Student data is completely private and untouched by any AI features. WeVideo does not use any student or personal data for training AI models. The use of AI features is not forced, and users will see which features are AI-powered via the icon next to them.

Data is processed for the specific task and not retained for external model improvement. There is a 30-day data retention period. In the event you terminate your WeVideo account, associated personal data is also deleted when you opt to delete all.
Generative vs. non-generative AI
Generative AI creates new content, images, code, and text based on the provided prompts. Non-generative AI analyzes existing data to modify material (e,g., background noise reduction) or transform it into media in different formats (e.g., caption generation or text-to-speech). WeVideo uses a combination of both generative AI and non-generative AI tools.
Generative AI
- AI-Assisted Interactions: Analyzes transcripts to suggest questions
Questions can be edited, adjusted for time or location, or deleted as users see fit. This is an easy way to assign interactive activities that align pedagogically with Bloom’s Taxonomy.
Non-generative AI
- Captions Generator: Provides speech-to-text transcription with the ability to be translated into different languages.
- Background Noise Reducer: Provides audio cleanup
- Text-to-Speech: Voice-overs generated by AI based on the text script provided by users.
The Captions Generator identifies speech within video and generates a .vtt caption file as a companion document to the video. Though automatically enabled in WeVideo, Captions can (and should) be edited for accuracy. The .vtt file can also be used on any other video-sharing platform with built-in controls for when to display them. The Captions Generator can be used for any video once exported, but it does not apply automatically and must be enabled.
The Background Noise Reducer takes a raw audio file and uses AI to identify a “primary” voice. It reduces the other identified background noise using a proprietary deployment of the DeepFilterNet v2 model, without any model training. This feature is only used when triggered and is not automatically applied to recordings. This feature results in cleaner and crisper-sounding content.
The
Text-to-Speech function allows users to enter text scripts and generate audio voice-overs from the entered content. This function needs to be enabled by the license admins and can be turned on for selected roles only if needed.
Access & permissions
WeVideo's AI tools are designed to save time on lesson planning, make learning more accessible, and deliver high-quality video content. For this reason, administrators have the broadest permissions and can control which AI features are accessible to teachers and students.
AI features are available only in teacher and administrative accounts, except for the Caprions Generator, which is available to all users. Users can easily see which tools are AI-assisted, as indicated by a magic wand or AI icon within the platform.

WeVideo AI features are meant to improve efficiency for educators while maintaining high standards of teaching and learning. We recommend using them for personal and non-commercial use. Users should use their own discretion and treat AI assistance as a co-teacher, not a replacement for teaching. Teachers and administrators are responsible for overseeing the safe implementation and use of AI.
WeVideo’s AI features are human-centered and use an opt-in approach to trigger the tools. Privacy and safety remain top priorities for WeVideo’s ethical AI implementation. While AI saves time, users remain responsible for the final accuracy of their content and should remain active participants in the AI-assisted learning process.
