Create an assignment with ClassFeed and commenting

ClassFeed and commenting can be enabled for the Multimedia Creation assignment and Quick Recording assignment. Navigate to the class where the assignment should be created, click the Create Assignment button, and select the Multimedia Creation or Quick Recording option from the drop-down menu.

Enter the information for the assignment and click the Next button on the top right of the window to proceed to the settings section for the assignment. For more information about creating assignments in Multimedia Creation, please see the articles below.

Adjust the participation type and due date, and toggle on the ClassFeed option for the assignment.

After enabling the ClassFeed option for the assignment, instructors can further customize the ClassFeed settings to meet the specific learning needs of the assignment.

  • Students must submit their assignment before they can view their classmates' submissions: The ClassFeed section will be hidden from learners until they submit their assignment.
  • Submissions are hidden from the ClassFeed until I approve them: Learners’ submissions will not be displayed to other learners until they are reviewed and approved by the instructor.
  • Students can leave text comments on their classmates’ submissions: Enable the commenting section in ClassFeed to allow learners to leave comments on their peers' submissions. To create a video-based discussion assignment, please select this option when creating the assignment.
    • Allow students to comment by recording video: Students can record videos as comments on others' submissions.
    • Student text comments are hidden from the ClassFeed until I approve them: Comments left by learners will be placed in Pending status and will only be displayed to other learners after the instructor approves them.

Monitor ClassFeed submissions

After learners submit their work, instructors can view the submissions from the assignment. Navigate to the class and click on the assignment to launch it.

If the 'Submissions are hidden from the ClassFeed until I approve them' option is enabled for the ClassFeed, please scroll down to the Student Works section to review the submissions by clicking on the learner’s or group’s name.

After reviewing the submissions, adjust the ClassFeed Visibility option to visible to display them in the ClassFeed.

Leave comments on learners' submissions in ClassFeed

As the instructor of the class, you can leave comments when reviewing learners’ submissions from the Student Work section or from the ClassFeed by entering the comments in the comment section. Learners can leave comments only after a submission is approved and displayed in the ClassFeed. Users can leave text comments or video comments in ClassFeed. Please see the section below for more information.

Text Comments

Select Text and enter the comments in the comment section.

When leaving comments as an instructor, you can choose to make them public, so all learners can see them, or private, so only the submission owner can view them. If the submission owner replies to a private comment, the reply will also be set to private and only visible to the instructor and themselves.

Video Comments

Instructors can also leave video comments on learners' submissions in ClassFeed. After opening the learner’s submission, switch to the Video tab and click the Record Video Comment button.

If you haven’t granted WeVideo camera and microphone permissions, please allow WeVideo to access your device's camera and microphone to create recordings.

Select whether the video comment will be private or public and click Record to start recording.

After completing the recording, click Stop to stop the recording. Please note that every video comment is limited to 5 minutes.

Preview the recording and click Save to save the video comment to ClassFeed. If you would like to re-record, click the Record Again button to start over.

After uploading the video comment, it will appear under the Video section of ClassFeed, and learners can click the Reply button to record videos as replies to your comment.

Comments moderation

Once the submissions have been moved into ClassFeed, other learners in the class with access to ClassFeed can view the submissions and leave their comments. If the “Student text comments are hidden from the ClassFeed until I approve them” option is enabled for the assignment, new comments from learners will be placed in the pending status until the instructor reviews them.

Launch the assignment from the class, switch to the ClassFeed section, and click on the submission to view the comments.

Review the pending comments and select whether to display them to other learners. If the comment is set to be hidden from other learners, only the learner who leaves the comment and the instructor can see it. Please note that once the status is changed, it can not be adjusted unless the learner edits the comment.

Whether the comment moderation is enabled or not, instructors can always delete the comments if needed. If there are no replies to the deleted comment, the comment will be removed completely. If there are replies to the deleted comment, the comment will be removed and replaced with a placeholder to indicate that it has been deleted.

FAQs

What happens if learners edit the comments after I approve them?

The edited comments will become pending again and will be hidden from other learners. Please review the edited comments again and select whether to show or hide the comments.

Can learners leave private comments?

Learners can not adjust the privacy settings of their comments. If they are replying to a private comment left by the instructor, their replies will be set to private to match the instructor’s comment privacy settings. Other comments from learners will be public.

What will learners see if only ClassFeed is enabled but commenting is not?

If commenting is disabled, only the instructor and submission owners can leave comments on their own submissions, and learners will not be able to comment on others’ submissions. All comments from the instructor and submission owners will be private and can only be viewed by the instructors and submission owners.

Can I enable ClassFeed and commenting after the assignment has been assigned?

The ClassFeed and commenting can be enabled by editing the assignment. To enable the ClassFeed for the assignment after assigning it, navigate to the assignment in the class and click the Edit button at the top right of the window.

Click the Next button at the top right of the window to move to the assignment settings page, toggle on the ClassFeed option, and select the desired settings from the list.

Can submissions be returned to learners after comments are added?

Yes, instructors can return submissions to learners at any time by clicking the Return button when reviewing submitted videos. Once the submission is returned to the learner, they have to re-edit the assignment and resubmit it to ClassFeed.

If the 'Submissions are hidden from the ClassFeed until I approve them' option is enabled in the ClassFeed, the new submissions will appear as Hidden in the ClassFeed. Please follow the steps in this section to review and adjust the ClassFeed Visibility option so it is visible to other learners in the ClassFeed.

If comments are added to the submission before it is returned to the learner, they will be labeled as “Previous Submissions” when the learner resubmits the assignment. This indicates that these comments were left on the earlier version of the submission.
